Fambabble was developed in response to research into digital family communication. The project as a whole, explores the impact of interface design on communication and interaction, aiming to better meet users' needs by facilitating more meaningful communication experiences.
Most group messaging platforms have remained largely unchanged since their inception, having plateaued in terms of innovation.
The goal? To develop a system that enhances group and familial digital communication by means of well established communication technique (i.e. the family fridge). this meant a deep research dive into digital social interaction, with a focus on existing communication applications and group based conversations.
These consideration are best understood through a perspective that considers that digital interface influences interaction and communication. The following points were identified as interface interaction interruptions found on existing platforms.
Chronological and vertical interface, allowing for links, photos and messages to be lost in an endless scroll amongst the text creating a very clunky and disjointed communication lacking flow.
Lack of personalisation and creation of a close-to-the-heart communication system which allows connection between families separated by distance; communication is often lost in the phone with no differentiation between different social groups.
Chronological format is not inclusive of individuals in different time zones thereby disallowing smooth and coherent communication threads.
Moreover, the commercialisation of these platforms has shifted their focus from connecting people to facilitating business transactions. This shift has introduced challenges such as scams, identity theft, and a decline in genuine communication and relationship-building.
The solution attempts to overcome the aforementioned challenges that present in group messaging apps in the following ways:
Personalization and customization options for authentic connection groups.
Reducing the immediacy of conversations to alleviate pressure for quick responses.
Implementation of a visual noticeboard-style communication system rather than a chronological scroll format.
Compatibility across different phone operating systems (Android/iPhone).
Mitigating time differences by emphasizing non-urgent communication and adjustable notification settings.
Inclusion of extended families, creating a network of interconnected communication "fridges."
Segregation of family communication from other ongoing conversations within messaging apps.
Enhancement of media integration within the communication system.
